Fertility Testing Q & A

Alane Park MD

What causes infertility?

Infertility is the inability to get pregnant with frequent, unprotected intercourse. Infertility can be an issue with the male or female partner or both in some cases.

When any of the steps in the reproduction process don’t happen, or the timing is off, pregnancy can’t happen. Because fertility is a complex condition, it takes time to diagnose the cause.

Many different factors can potentially cause infertility, including:

Cervical or Uterine Problems

Benign growths, endometrial scarring, or structural issues interfere with implantation or increases the risk of miscarriage.

Fallopian Tube Damage

Previous surgery and certain diseases damage or block the fallopian tubes, preventing sperm from reaching the egg.

Ovulation Disorders

Imbalanced reproductive hormones interfere with regular ovulation or prevent it completely.

Risk Factors

Age, smoking, an unhealthy weight, and sexually transmitted diseases can impact fertility.

Unexplained Infertility

When the cause of infertility can’t be found, treatment is still encouraged.

What is fertility testing?

Couples having regular intercourse for more than a few months without achieving pregnancy begin to question their fertility. For women under 35 years of age, Dr. Park recommends fertility testing after attempting pregnancy for a year. Women over 35 years old should meet with Dr. Park after six months of trying.

Schedule an appointment to discuss your fertility right away if you have:

Dr. Park uses many tests and procedures to assess your fertility:

  • Physical exam
  • Health history
  • Hysterosalpingogram X-rays to check for fallopian tube blockage
  • Sexual history
  • Blood test and ultrasound to check ovulation

Can infertility be treated?

There is good news for couples trying to get pregnant. Medication and surgical procedures successfully treat approximately 85-90% of infertility cases. With compassion and caring, Dr. Park explores all your options to help you achieve and maintain a healthy pregnancy.
